Jeff Mills Joins Apple Music’s ADE Panel to Explore the Future of Spatial Audio

Jeff Mills headlines Apple Music’s Spatial Audio panel at Amsterdam Dance Event 2025, unveiling how immersive sound will transform the way we create, experience, and preserve music in the digital era.

A Visionary Talk at Dolby Atmos House

At Amsterdam Dance Event 2025 (ADE), Apple Music hosted a groundbreaking panel at Dolby Atmos House featuring Jeff Mills, Detroit’s techno pioneer and futurist thinker.
Joining him were Stephen Campbell (Apple Music’s Global Head of Dance, Electronic, and DJ Mixes), Frankie Hutchinson, and Clif Norell, Apple Music’s Lead Spatial Audio Mixing Engineer.

Together, they explored how Spatial Audio is redefining the relationship between artists, technology, and listeners — turning sound into an immersive, 3D experience.

From Detroit to the Digital Dimension

The discussion highlighted the making of Mills’ “Tomorrow Comes the Harvest” in Spatial Audio, as well as his pioneering project “Outer to Inner Atmosphere: The Escape Velocity Mix.”
The latter holds the distinction of being the first-ever DJ mix created specifically for Spatial Audio on Apple Music.

The project also launched One Mix in Spatial Audio, a series that spotlights global DJ talent in an entirely immersive sound environment, merging electronic innovation with cutting-edge audio technology.

Reimagining How Music Is Heard and Preserved

Mills shared how Spatial Audio bridges past and future generations of DJs and producers.

“This technology replicates how I might play records together,” Mills explained. “It simulates that process and allows someone to imagine how I would do it in the future.”

For Mills, Spatial Audio is not just about better sound — it’s about preserving artistic intent and giving listeners access to the creative DNA of performance itself.

The Future: Beyond Sound, Into Sensory Reality

As the conversation deepened, Mills looked further ahead, describing a world where sound convinces the mind it has entered another space entirely.

“We can hear things in 3D,” he said. “But the visual aspect is what we still need to address — how to convince someone they’re no longer where they are. One day, you might be sitting next to Miles Davis and the sound engineer. These things will come. It’s going to make us rethink sound completely.”

His words captured the philosophical and futuristic vision that has always defined his career — from Underground Resistance to his intergalactic techno explorations.

New Era of Immersive Listening

For Apple Music, the ADE 2025 panel marks a milestone in its ongoing mission to push the boundaries of digital sound.
With pioneers like Jeff Mills leading the dialogue, Spatial Audio is no longer just an enhancement — it’s a creative frontier reshaping how electronic music will be produced, performed, and experienced in the next decade.
