With VOWWS, drummer Josh Freese and producer Danny Lohner joining the bill, deadmau5 is expanding his Halloween takeover into a meeting point between cinematic electronic music and the darker edges of alternative rock.
Halloween has always suited deadmau5. Between the theatrical visuals, the imposing stage productions and a musical identity built around tension as much as release, Joel Zimmerman has spent years cultivating a world that feels deliberately removed from the ordinary festival experience. This October, that atmosphere will take on a new dimension at one of America’s most recognisable live music venues.
deadmau5 has announced that VOWWS will join his DEADMAU5 HALLOWEEN shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on October 30 and 31, 2026. The Australian-born, Los Angeles-based duo will perform alongside drummer Josh Freese and producer, bassist and Nine Inch Nails collaborator Danny Lohner, bringing a distinctly industrial and alternative-rock presence to the two-night event.
The announcement adds another layer to a Halloween weekend that already promises elaborate visuals, selections from deadmau5’s extensive catalogue and new music still to come. It also signals an approach that goes beyond simply dressing a conventional electronic music show in Halloween aesthetics. By bringing together artists from different corners of the alternative music landscape, Zimmerman is shaping the event around a broader, darker musical identity.
A Halloween First at Red Rocks
For deadmau5, the 2026 performances represent a personal milestone. Despite more than 15 years of autumn shows at Red Rocks, this will be the first time he has performed at the Colorado amphitheatre on Halloween itself.
The distinction gives the dates an added significance. Red Rocks is already an extraordinary setting for live music, with its natural sandstone formations and open-air stage providing a visual scale that conventional venues cannot easily replicate. Pairing that environment with deadmau5’s production style creates an obvious foundation for a Halloween spectacle.
Yet the appeal of the shows rests on more than the date and location. Zimmerman has built a career around making electronic music feel like an immersive world rather than a sequence of tracks. From the recognisable mau5head to expansive visual environments and carefully constructed live arrangements, his performances have long placed production and musical identity in close conversation.
The Halloween format offers a natural extension of that approach. Audiences are being encouraged to arrive in costume, while the production is expected to embrace the theatrical possibilities of the occasion. The soundtrack will draw from deadmau5’s deep catalogue, with new material also anticipated.
That combination gives the event room to balance familiarity with unpredictability. For longtime fans, the catalogue offers a connection to the records that established Zimmerman’s place in electronic music. New music, meanwhile, keeps the performances from becoming purely retrospective.
The result is an event designed around atmosphere as much as nostalgia, using Halloween as a creative framework rather than a decorative theme.
VOWWS Bring Their Own Darkness
The addition of VOWWS makes the musical direction particularly interesting.
Formed by Matt James and Rizz, the Australian-born, Los Angeles-based duo have developed a sound that moves through industrial textures, alternative rock and dark, cinematic songwriting. Their work often balances abrasive sonic elements with emotional vulnerability, creating music that can feel unsettling without losing its melodic centre.
That combination places them comfortably within the wider musical territory surrounding deadmau5’s darker productions. While the artists operate in different genres, both are drawn to atmosphere, tension and the possibilities of building a distinct world around their music.
VOWWS have also established connections with artists whose work sits across alternative, industrial and experimental scenes. Their early single Losing Myself in You was co-written with and featured Gary Numan, an influential figure whose electronic sound helped shape several generations of darker music. Their remix of Under the World’s Structure of Love featured Chino Moreno of Deftones, while their 2022 single WAIT included Chelsea Wolfe.
The duo have also attracted support from artists including Korn, A Perfect Circle and Billy Corgan. Their appearance at Red Rocks alongside deadmau5 brings that alternative lineage into an electronic music setting without requiring either side to abandon its identity.
This is where the booking moves beyond the familiar logic of adding another DJ to a festival lineup. VOWWS offer a different texture and emotional register, potentially shifting the atmosphere of the weekend from electronic spectacle towards something more expansive and genre-fluid.
For an event built around Halloween, that difference is especially fitting. Darkness in music can mean many things: the physical weight of industrial percussion, the unease of distorted sound, the emotional intensity of alternative songwriting or the suspense created by a carefully designed electronic arrangement. VOWWS draw from several of those traditions, making them a natural fit for a show that places mood at the centre of its identity.
Josh Freese and Danny Lohner Complete the Picture
The lineup becomes even more distinctive with the addition of Josh Freese and Danny Lohner.
Freese is one of the most accomplished drummers in alternative rock, with a career that includes work with Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and The Vandals. His reputation extends across different musical environments, from punk and alternative rock to industrial music and large-scale touring productions.
His involvement with VOWWS also has a direct connection to the duo’s recorded work. Freese appears on their latest album, I’ll Fill Your House With an Army, bringing an established musical relationship to the Red Rocks performance rather than simply joining as a guest for the occasion.
Lohner adds another significant link to the industrial and alternative music world. Known for his work with Nine Inch Nails and The Black Queen, he has spent much of his career operating at the intersection of production, performance and sonic experimentation.
Together, Freese and Lohner give VOWWS a live configuration that draws on substantial experience within alternative music. Their presence also reinforces the sense that the Red Rocks booking is being assembled around a particular sound and atmosphere, not merely a collection of names.
For audiences, the combination creates an intriguing prospect: an electronic music headliner sharing the bill with musicians whose creative histories are closely connected to the heavier, more experimental edges of modern music. Rather than treating electronic and alternative sounds as separate worlds, the event places them in the same space and allows their common interests in texture, rhythm and intensity to become part of the experience.
That crossover feels increasingly relevant to contemporary electronic music. Artists and audiences have become more comfortable moving between genres, while live productions increasingly draw inspiration from cinema, industrial design, alternative culture and immersive visual art. The most compelling collaborations often emerge when those influences are allowed to coexist without being forced into a single category.
The Return of the mau5hop
The Halloween weekend will extend beyond the amphitheatre with the return of the mau5hop, deadmau5’s pop-up merchandise experience in Denver.
Opening October 30 and 31, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the pop-up will be located at 95 S Cherokee Street. Visitors can expect specialty merchandise, limited-edition apparel, pins and collectibles that will not be available online or at the Red Rocks shows.
deadmau5 and members of his circle are also scheduled to appear for meet-and-greets and signings from noon to 3 p.m. on both days.
The pop-up adds a physical meeting point for fans travelling to Denver for the performances. In an era when artist merchandise is often distributed through online stores and touring stalls, limited-edition releases and in-person appearances can give a live event a wider sense of community. They also allow an artist’s visual identity to extend beyond the stage into objects and experiences that fans can take home.
For deadmau5, whose instantly recognisable aesthetic has become central to his public image, that connection between music, design and merchandise is particularly relevant. The mau5head is more than a logo; it is a visual shorthand for a creative universe that fans recognise before the music even begins.
The pop-up therefore serves as a companion to the concerts, turning the Halloween dates into a broader fan experience rather than two isolated performances.
Building a Different Kind of Electronic Music Event
The strongest electronic music events often have a clear identity. A compelling lineup matters, but so does the relationship between the artists, the venue and the atmosphere the organisers are trying to create.
The 2026 DEADMAU5 HALLOWEEN shows bring those elements together through a combination of setting, theatrical presentation and a lineup that crosses genre boundaries. Red Rocks supplies the scale, Halloween provides the creative premise, and VOWWS, Freese and Lohner introduce a darker musical dimension that complements deadmau5’s own approach to electronic production.
For Zimmerman, the shows also continue a long-running relationship with an audience that expects more than a standard DJ set. His career has been defined by a willingness to build recognisable visual and sonic identities, often positioning electronic music as a complete performance experience rather than simply a soundtrack for a crowd.
The inclusion of VOWWS makes that proposition more interesting. Their music draws from traditions that have long explored the emotional possibilities of darkness, while Freese and Lohner bring experience from some of alternative music’s most influential projects. The result is a lineup with a clear aesthetic connection, even as its participants come from different musical backgrounds.
With limited tickets remaining, the two-night run is shaping up as one of the more distinctive entries on the autumn electronic music calendar. More music and announcements from deadmau5 are also expected to follow.
Halloween at Red Rocks will inevitably be judged by the spectacle it delivers. But the more enduring appeal may lie in the way the event brings different musical worlds together, using one of electronic music’s most recognisable artists as the centre of a darker, more expansive live experience.
